After the Storm: Finding My Way Back

If you’ve spent any time reading around The Curator, you probably already know a little piece of my story. You know that I went through cancer, and how an illness like that has a way of completely shaking up everything you thought was solid.
What we don’t talk about nearly enough, though, is what happens once the storm actually passes.
When treatments wrap up, the scans come back clear, and everyone around you breathes a sigh of relief expecting you to just jump right back into everyday life, this strange, heavy silence creeps in. On paper, everything was finally back to normal, but inside, I felt this quiet, hollow void.
I would look at my daily routines, my work, and all my usual responsibilities. Don't get me wrong, I was so deeply thankful just to be here. But in the quiet moments, I couldn’t stop wondering: Is this really it? What do I actually want to wake up for? Who even am I beneath the roles I play and what everyone else expects of me?
I didn't want to just drift through my days on autopilot anymore. I wanted something that genuinely felt like mine, built on real joy and simple, honest purpose.
In all that uncertainty, I turned to the one place that never asked me to pretend or put on a brave face: a completely blank page.
Morning and night, I sat down at my desk with a pen and just let whatever was in my head spill out. I didn’t care about neat handwriting, pretty layouts, or writing anything poetic. I wrote down the raw fears that kept me awake at night, the quiet sadness, the self-doubt, and the tiny sparks of hope that were still hanging on. I let the notebook hold everything I was simply too tired to carry around in my head.
Little by little, putting words on paper helped quiet the noise so I could finally hear myself think again. Sitting down with a notebook became the one part of my day where I wasn't rushing, performing, or trying to fix anything. It just let me breathe. It’s what gave me the courage to step outside my comfort zone, share my world on YouTube and this website, and build a creative life that actually feels true to who I am.
Journaling didn't just help me make sense of a difficult season. It truly became a part of who I am.
That’s why I love encouraging people to sit down and write, because you don’t need anything fancy to start. You don’t need pristine notebooks or perfect penmanship. You just need a quiet moment and an empty page to let your messy, honest thoughts spill out.
We live in a world that can feel so rushed and noisy, but your own lived story, your memories, and the things that make your heart ache or light up are completely irreplaceable. Nobody else can live or feel those moments for you, and giving voice to them is where real healing begins.
If you’re sitting in that same quiet, uncertain place right now and aren’t sure where to begin, I made a little something for you.
I put together a free printable guide called Discover What Sparks You: A Guided Self-Discovery Workbook, and it’s waiting for you over in The Studio.
It gathers the very prompts and questions I turned to when my thoughts felt overwhelming, when I needed to gently let go of self-doubt and reconnect with what brings me alive. Feel free to bring it to your desk, make yourself a warm drink, and just explore a question or two at your own pace.
There’s really no rush, and you don’t need to have everything figured out right away. Just keep writing, be gentle with yourself, and keep showing up for your life. My deepest hope is that through this space of reflection, you rediscover your spark and find the passion that has been waiting for you all along.
With warmth,
Sun
